Homemade Hair Gel

DSC_3430-compressedHair care products is another area in our home that I try to keep natural. Hair care products can be full of chemicals and fake scents which are endocrine disruptors and can really wreak havoc on your system. Finding natural hair care products can be challenging though. So when I created this homemade hair gel and it worked, I had to share it with you!

I have only used hair gel and mousse for a few periods in my life. Then after I had my last baby, amazingly enough my hair turned curly! Actually, to be precise,  half of my hair turned curly. The other half only got slightly wavy, but that is ok! It just means I only have to curl half of my hair when I want it curly. 🙂

Anyway, back to the hair gel! I decided I wanted to find a natural gel to help hold these curls I found myself with. I also didn’t like how most gels or mousses I had used made my hair feel sticky or stiff so was hoping for something that didn’t do that. That is when I decided to try making it myself. This gel worked great! It is simple and inexpensive to make and holds the curls really well! It even held them while standing out in a drizzling rain! My hair also feels soft and nourished rather than sticky and stiff which I love.

There are only three ingredients in this spray: aloe gel, water and essential oils. Aloe gel can be very nourishing and moisturizing to the hair. It can also work as a spray on conditioner or detangler depending on the ratio of aloe to water you choose. I used it as a detangler on my daughters very fine hair and it worked wonderfully.

For the hair gel: I filled an empty spray bottle 3/4 full with aloe gel. I then filled it the rest of the way with water and added my essential oils. I used about 20 drops of oil for a 4 oz spray bottle. My favorite oils to use in my hair are cedarwood, lavender, rosemary and ylang ylang. You could also adjust the aloe to water ratio depending on your need. More aloe would make an even stronger hold while less would make it more for a leave in conditioner or detangler. This works so well and also smells great! I hope this helps add to your natural hair care cabinet!
